Guys, does anyone know about doing lengthening tibias with no IM nail? The doctor of mine told me my bone gap was too narrow to put a nail in, and he'd be inserting a smaller nail after I completed lengthening when I come to remove the external fixators.

Is this safe? And issue I would have with non union or deformity?

I know, but usually they do with a hexagon lengthening device, not LON

My main question would be do you think there would be an issue with alignment or non union because I am lengthening with no IM nail?

Quote from: Medium Drink Of Water on December 20, 2022, 03:00:28 PMThere is no problem with external-only LL.  It's the least invasive method.  You don't even need a second major surgery to remove the frames.  It's the best way in my opinion.

I'm confused, I don't need to remove the frames? But my method is monorail. Not hexapod fixator.

Quote from: Body Builder on December 20, 2022, 08:17:17 PMI did tibia LL with monorails too. External only. A very easy way to do LL and almost painless, at least for me. But the risk for misalignment is huge. I had a significant misalignment in my right foot that I fixed with a titanium plate 5 years after I finished LL. My left leg has also a slight misalignment but nothing important.

Generally speaking, tibia LL with monorails only is relatively rare and if you end up without a misalignment you will be vert lucky. That said, it is by far the easiest way to do LL and has the less invasive surgery out of any other way as it needs even less drills than Ilizarov and of course nothing inside your bone.

But thats not LON as the title of the topic said. It is externals only with monorails.

I see. This is what I was worried about. Could inserting a IM nail after completing lengthening (when removing the external fixators) eliminate that misalignment?

Also, did you have tibia LL with monorails and you had no IM nail at all? Even after removal of fixators? So you had to have monorails on until your bone consolidated?

Or do you put an IM nail inside after completing lengthening.

Quote from: Medium Drink Of Water on December 22, 2022, 03:56:18 AMA friend of mine got that done and had a misalignment.  Better to use the ring fixators.

Did he insert an IM nail after completing lengthening? Or just have the monorail on until he fully consolidated?
