Surgeons: Dr. Paley & Dr. Robbins
Procedure: Bilateral femur lengthening (PRECICE 2.2)

I had my surgery last week.

I haven't seen Dr. Paley since the consultation, which seems normal since he is extremely busy. Dr. Robbins has been very nice and is in charge of most of my follow-ups.

On the day of surgery, I arrived at the hospital at 5 AM. This time the hospital informed me of the arrival time one day earlier.

After checking in, I was sent to a room with several other patients. I used the cleaning solution they gave me to wash my entire body, then changed into the hospital gown. A nurse placed an IV line in my hand.

I was taken to the operating room around 6:30–7:00 AM. I don’t remember much after that due to anesthesia.

I woke up in the recovery room. At that point I didn’t feel pain yet, but both of my legs felt extremely sore and swollen.

I didn’t have much appetite that night, but the nurse encouraged me to eat a little.

-Day 1

Mostly monitoring vitals and receiving antibiotics.
I started PT with a therapist and felt quite dizzy when standing up for the first time.
I only slept about 4 hours that night.

---

Day 2

Very similar to Day 1, but I was able to stand a bit longer during PT.
I slept about 4 hours.

Day 3

I felt extreme soreness and pain when going from sitting to standing.
That transition is definitely the hardest part so far.
I slept around 7 hours.

---

Day 4

I was discharged from the hospital and took my first shower with assistance.

It felt really nice to leave the hospital. The care there was great, but I prefer having my own space.

At first I was scared that I wouldn’t be able to move around much, but now I can transfer myself from the bed to the wheelchair without much difficulty.

---

I also started outpatient PT about one week after surgery.
It is painful, but I’m trying to stay consistent and see how far I can go.

My goal is to lengthen as much as safely possible. If at any point I feel that continuing would cause permanent damage, I will stop.

If anyone here has gone through femur lengthening with Dr. Paley & Dr. Robbins, I would really appreciate any advice.

1.
One question I have for people who have gone through femur lengthening with Paley or Robbins:

During the bi-weekly X-rays, do they usually tell you the exact measurements (how many millimeters you have lengthened so far)?

I’m also curious if they typically check whether both femurs are lengthening equally.

Do you normally receive a copy of your X-rays or the detailed measurements, or do you have to specifically ask for them?

I just want to make sure everything is progressing normally and both sides stay consistent.

2.
How many hours of PT did you do per day in the early phase?

Any tips for the first few weeks of lengthening would be greatly appreciated.

Eric, I did this about 6 years ago.  They will check everything to make sure everything is on point.  But your biweekly consults with Dr. Robbins are an opportunity to ask any questions or voice any concerns. They are measuring everything and checking the lengthening process constantly, no worries.  Best of luck.  Things do get a tad harder as you increase in height due to all that soft tissue lengthening.  Keep stretching daily, maybe every few hours do some stretches.  Get a looped stretching band for your room.  Those help a lot.  Staying at Hilton Gardens?
