Did your surgeon fix your fibulas with screws or was that not necessary?
Hello Activated one question. How are you? I wanted to ask you a question: After the lengthening period, does the doctor place an internal nail to help with consolidation?
Hi, activated xx. I did external tibias recently, and now i am at consolidation phase. Did not do ATL, but wish i had. Sometimes the pins cause pain near the knees. They are uncomfortable, the fixators. And yes, this procedure is challenging in all levels. It challenges your patience, how bad you want to be taller, and sometimes it challenges our sanity. What helped me was a friend and a family members ' support, also praying, and mostly, thinking that I wanted that for so long, and i am blessed enough to be able to do it, and i feel grateful inspite of all the pain i had , and still have sometimes. Time passes quickly. I have done 6cm , and what helped me to reaching it, without any complications of whatsoever is going slow, i started lengthening at 0.8mm/ day, after i reached 2.4cm, dr. Suggested i go to 0.75mm, i was disappointed cause xrays showed very good callus. But trust me when i tell you, going slow is much more comfortable. I am glad i listened to my Dr.
Stretching is like magic, it is your loyal friend and best painkiller. Please, keep stretching. If you need someone to talk to, i am here for you. Dr.Assayag is a great surgeon and human. Happy thanks giving !

It’s up to the patient. I personally want to have a trauma nail so I can have these fixations off, but Assayag allows you to wear them until consolidation as well.
Quote from: Bob on November 28, 2024, 01:28:23 AMYou write your surgeon prefer to do .5 mm lengthening for tibia per day. How many mm lengthening for femur per day does he prefer?
.75 to 1mm depending on bone formation. Doing it faster(1mm) doesn’t really matter with internal nail, because either way the consolidation time for the bone will be the same. Also being conservative saves you a lot of pain. When he slowed me down to .5 I noticed a lot of inflammation around the fixator pins disappeared. The only reason to go faster is if your consolidation is fast or if you’re wearing externals to have them off faster (if your consolidation is good, to insert a trauma nail).
Assayag is conservative but all his patients do exceptionally well except the ones that don’t follow his instructions. Like there was a guy that did 2mm for a few days and had really bad nerve pain. If you follow his instructions and give your body the nutrients and calories it needs, you’ll have a smooth journey. Assayag is by far the most compassionate doctor. There was someone who was 6 months post-Op that fell while standing, and Assayag personally came and visited him. He also checked his ER xrays at no cost. Another patient here had a weird nose coming from the ERC machine and he offered to come on thanksgiving day to check it.
This is a man with a family at home and an extremely busy schedule, aside from LL patients he’s always doing surgeries back to back for actual deformity/injury trauma patients. No other LL doctor is going to do that for you, I honestly would prefer him over any other doctor. You can sense that he is a genuine doctor of medicine that just wants to practice medicine to improve lives. I felt this when we saw my bowed legs were kind of corrected and he got a little excited about it. He’s always excited and passionate about his practice and any one of his patients will tell you that

Thank you, best of wishes on your recovery! You are completely right, this challenges everything, and a hidden gem of doing with Assayag is the Hackerman-Patz house where you can stay in a housing with other LL patients. If I was alone this whole process it would have been harder mentally. I’ve made friends here and we have fun sitting down and talking and venting to each other. One of them leaves this week and I am sad about that, but the people that do LL alone have a much harder time mentally than those who don’t have anyone around. The other day I was feeling down and I went into the lobby and hung out with some of the other patients and they were cracking jokes for a couple hours. If I just had an airbnb or hotel and was completely alone without any social interaction, I’d probably feel depressed a lot of times
Hi, I am happy for you ,for having company. A good company makes the hardest things in life ,much easier and tolerable!
Hey guys, checking in.
Everything pretty much is going the same it seems, I hope it doesn’t become more difficult. I’m not tight yet and I’ve retained my muscle so far. I’m close to 2cm now.

I can pretty much get around unassisted anywhere in my room. The camera is zoomed out iPhone .5 so might look weird/fishbowl. They did move me to a room that was smaller also, since they needed the bigger one for a family. I shower and do everything unassisted, and use crutches or scooter for long distances. My swelling has went away except for around the mid and upper tibia, pressing on it leaves a dent that takes a little while to fill in.
It’s been getting freezing here in the 20’s, so scootering to PT has been rough. That one minute commute is short but feels forever in that blizzard wind. I didn’t really pack any puffer or heavy jackets either. It’s pretty surreal being here, because I’ve met people at the HP house that have been following my diary for years, and I’ve met people that I read there diary 4-5 years ago. It’s such a weird coincidence seeing them in person.
