I'm wondering if I should do just 8 cm on femurs to reach 176 cm and call it a day or do two segments (5+5 or 6+4) a long time apart to be 178 instead. From a recovery standpoint.

If you can afford it - Tibia first then femur 3 weeks later, 5 cm in each. Much more likely to reach your goals without complications, not to mention better proportions, etc.

I advise against this personally.  The quad patients at Paley's seemed to have a much harder time and unless you're very flexible and stretch like crazy, you may get stopped before reaching your goal.  If you want 10cm, do them a year apart so your body has a chance to recover and you can stretch the muscles further.
