The rule seems to be that patients gotta stay 1 month after surgery in the hotel. Can German locals go back home to Berlin, Munich, Köln etc soon after discharge?

Sooner than this? No I don‘t think so.

Some history lesson: Dr Betz saw this surgery with too rose-colored glasses than it actually is and thus thought it’s no problem to go home after 2 weeks.
Now that he is retiring Dr Becker took over and decided that patients have to stay in Mooswald (=an orthopedic rehabilitation center). He also apparently wants to increase the minimum stay to 4 weeks. I was one of the last set of patients who could go home after 2 weeks and tbh especially if you don‘t have someone to care for you at home I would highly advice staying a month or longer. The longer stay is also why the price went up by quite a bit.

Is this true for German patients also? In Germany you can pretty much travel from some big cities to Freiburg in 2-3 hours. So will it really make a difference to stay in rehab clinic for 1 month or you just recover in the komfort of your home?

That makes no sense. Why should this be different for anyone? You gotta stay there for a reason.

Isn't it different if someone has to fly to Australia vs just drive to a neighbouring city in a couple of hours or so? Less risk of embolism, any emergency you can go see the doc in hours, etc

Btw is he super strict like Paley or is he someone who would work on a case by case basis?

I had this surgery done 5 days ago.

I would not dream of going home prior to two weeks unless you live in a care home with a very dedicated nursing team to attend to your activities of daily living.

well you don't know how you'll feel in another 9 days Are Germans allowed to go back home after surgery with Becker?

But seriously, it was very common for Betz patients to back home after 10 days of stay in the hospital. People have gone to work. Betz said one guy went to work 7 days after surgery. I am not saying it's possible by everyone, but IF the patient feels good, will they allow it is my question.

My flight out is 2 weeks after surgery.  Hoping to keep that but I can change it if needed.
