Whats the best option for a cell phone while away in India?  My provider wants 500 bucks for a  ty overseas package that gives me nothing as far as minutes and data.  I have an old iphone.  Is getting it activated there an option?  Anyone done this?  Im open to better ideas.

Are you looking to make international calls? If so you may just want to set up a skype and use the wifi.

You can get an old iphone or samsung galaxy pretty cheap in India. If you just want one for local use so you can contact your doctor or restaurants and use 4G to access the internet, then you can buy one at a shop over there and have someone from the hospital you have surgery in assist you in obtaining a sim card from a local service provider.

well see I think calling fees here is India extremely cheap .. even with international calls
just buy a non smart phone with 1000 INR .. the simcard will cost you about 100INR maybe ..
but don't register it under your name cuz when your visa will expired the will disconnected your sim card
