Given the significance of rest during the recovery process of limb lengthening and the potential impact of sleep apnea and poor sleep on bone mineral density, I am curious if anyone has undergone limb lengthening while dealing with sleep apnea and how their recovery journey unfolded. Many individuals may have sleep apnea without being aware of it.
I am pondering whether my current use of CPAP could affect my bone formation despite being on this treatment. I plan to discuss this concern with the surgeon.
It should not have a significant impact, considering that jaw surgery involves multiple osteotomies to reposition the bone and stimulate new bone growth to fill the gaps. There exists a form of jaw surgery for treating sleep apnea that employs distraction osteogenesis on the jaw, following the same principle as limb lengthening, where the patient essentially distracts their jaw themselves.
