mine is not the ERC, but my nail in my leg makes weird noises in the lats 2mm of the 80mm journey. And the ERC usually jerks a bit while lengthening, I have noticed it stopped doing that in the last 3-4mm for me.

Quote from: Essurfer8 on May 02, 2023, 08:11:11 AMFor those who have had surgery. Does anyone’s precice nail a gear grinding or skipping noise when lengthening? Similar to a clutch slipping in a manual car. Mine suddenly started around the 18mm mark..

Yep, this happened to me too on my right leg about a third of the way through the lengthening process. The x-rays confirmed it to be signs of early consolidation. My doctor had me stop taking calcium and D3 supplements and speed up the lengthening on the right leg. It kept making those grinding / gear noises but I was able to complete the full 8cm.

When I asked the Nuvasive rep, he didn’t know what it was and thought nothing was wrong ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . So I wouldn’t take what they say as truth.

In my case, if I lengthened 10 millimeters on the leg that was making noises, the actual amount lengthened was only like 6-7.

I’ll also say that my left leg only made those grinding / gear noises at the very very end when lengthening was finished. In other words, you’ll hear that noise either if you’re done lengthening or if soft tissues are creating resistance.

I highly doubt it's noise from body resistance. It's the nail for sure. It's metal twisting at a lot of rounds per minute. My nuvaive rep says that sometimes they make these noise towards the end and nothing to be alaramed about as long as nothing hurts.

I freaked out cause I felt vibrations, like when your phone rings on vibrate. But he told me to continue as normal.

Same. But I heard the noises on the right leg pretty early on. 5 days after hearing the noises for the first time was my normally scheduled x-ray. Doctor tells me I have signs of early consolidation on the right leg (before I had mentioned anything about the noises on the ERC machine). The X-rays consistently showed my leg with way more callous and soft tissue on the right leg throughout the process. Only ever heard noises on the ERC when lengthening the right leg.

The noise does come from the nail. From the nail struggling to lengthen as it hits resistance. Or at least that’s my theory based on what happened. As long as the amount lengthened (from X-Rays) is the same as what the ERC machine shows, it’s not an issue obviously.

I kept lengthening with weird noises. But in the middle of my second to last lengthening cycle, I heard a loud pop from inside where my bone is. And immediately took the ERC off my leg. Not sure if it is too consolidated, or just because nail reached end capacity. But with around 0.4mm away from the full 80mm, I've just decided to start the consolidation phase. I highly doubt 0.4mm will make any difference in my life.
