Amputations happen when someone has been in a severe accident and has effectively shattered their bones in multiple places. The patients get the opportunity of frames or amputation. Often frames in these cases have to be worn for 12-24 months and even then there is no guarantee it will work. As for people who have overlengthened surgeons will rebrake bones and remove a segment of bone to reduce length before they tell someone to amputate or be forced to.
Excessive lengthening and poor alignment are possibly the biggest dangers of leg lengthening.
Maximum amount Mitkovic patients do in tibiae
10 cm isn't that outrageous when you think about people that have done way more than that like dr salameh's 16 cm tibiae patient and didn't paley do like 15 inches on one patient

he sadly never wrote a diary but was mentioned briefly in other dr salameh's patient diary's in the old forum i might post a pic if i can find the diary
edit: after some snooping around, couldn't find the diary where he was mentioned but pics of him are on dr salameh's site http://www.lengthening-sldf.com/index.php?act=open&programid=16 apparently, he lengthened 8, had it consolidate, and came back for more lengthening.
Yeah another reason to go for internals.
