Dr G in Canada on Cyborg4Life channel (YouTube) did say she will be rejecting smokers. Watch that video, she does mention it towards the end. Do you know which doctor refused your friend?

Dr Paley says he rejects smokers and vapers because of some serious issues like non union or the risk of embolism. A damaged lung may even lead to death. Dr. Giotikas and Dr. Guichet lost patients because of embolism. I believe Dr Paley's condition is to quit 3 months  before surgery

I don't think being a former smoker is an issue, but if your going to quit that is great period, regardless of LL, and much better you quit 3+ months before your surgery. Smokers have much higher risks. I am a former smoker and had a good outcome. I'd quit like half a decade before my LL though. Definitely quit smoking regardless of LL or no LL. Good luck! You can do it!

Any true doctor should have rejected smokers for LL as the extra risk is way too big and unnecessary. Also smoking harms bone healing.
Is someone is really ready to do something so massive like LL and can't quit smoking then he is not ready for LL too.
