Apparently they are having some issue with production due to registration or something, thereby holding up some upcoming surgeries? Has anyone else heard about this?

Yes, I'm afraid it's true! Giotikas mentioned this last week at the hospital..the production of Precice has stopped since before Christmas because the factory is under some sort of inspection and authorization. 
The doctor said that he only has stock for a few more cases here and he will then have to just wait until the production of Precice is restored in late March or April! He actually seemed very frustrated about this and he went as far as calling them (Nuvasive) "flippant" for not having sorted the issue promptly and ontime.

Damn. Birkholtz has no idea when the stocking will happen again. I might have to go fitbone instead.

And yeah this is an insanely dumb problem, given this is not a resource issue but merely a competence issue.
