I did some recreational gymnastics when I was younger, and I remember the stretches being very painful compared to stretches in other sports.
I'm currently working towards being able to do the middle, left and right leg splits before surgery.

Gymnasts, how painful was PT compared to the normal stretches? Did being flexible make it easier for you?

Doubt gymnasts do this.

I didn't do much PT during my lengthening, but it was a different kind of pain in different places than I remember from gymnastics classes as a kid.  It's because during LL your legs have surgical injuries, and some things are getting stretched way, way out while others aren't affected much.

PT I think is overrated.  Reducing the pain and misery during lengthening and then catching up on stretching gradually was the way I decided to do it.
