You legally can't drive while you're still taking painkillers, but beyond that, assuming you have the appropriate flexibility, it's a question of risk. If you have to slam on the breaks, you could put a ton of pressure through your leg and break/damage the rod.

for me it was about 6 weeks or 7 when I drove for the first time while distracting. I couldn't drive far however because after 15-20 min driving I'd get shin nerve pain and it was pretty painful, I'd have to step out and stretch my leg for it to go away.
