Hi everyone,

I will have Tibia CLL surgery with half-ring Ilizarov external fixation in Cairo on December 7 or 8. My surgeon will be Dr. Khaled Laymouna, who was previously an assistant to Dr. Bagirov in Moscow and is offering surgery options in Moscow, Baku, and Cairo.

To share a bit about myself: I am Asian, 167 cm at night, and live in Germany. I plan to complete the entire lengthening process in Egypt and will be posting updates here to share my journey.

Thank you all for your support, feel free to share your thoughts or reply!

Day -1, 30.11.2024
The leg size was measured at night and the ilizarov fixator was assembled. The doctor recommended using a full ring consisting of two half rings during the lengthening period, and removing the rear half ring after the extension is completed.

Day 0-7 01.12.2024 - 07.12.2024

Day 0: Surgery at night, entered the operating room at about 4 or 5 pm, came out at 9 pm, partial anesthetized,  I could feel the doctor tapping my legs, various drill sound, when I left the operating room, the anesthesia effect had begun to fade, and I started to feel pain. After a while of observation, I was sent back to the single room. It hurt a lot at night, but I fell asleep in the early morning. It did not hurt much after I got up. The operation was still very successful, the wound was small, there was no bleeding, there was no nerve damage, and the toes could move.

Day 1: I had various injections and drips, and I lay still. My right leg was more flexible than my left leg, and my left leg was weak and hard to move. The doctor also said that generally after surgery, there is one good leg and one not-so-good leg, but as time goes by, it is normal for them to switch between the good and the bad, and the reason is not clear yet.

Day 2: I started trying to walk with a walker. It was difficult to walk. I crawled back to bed after ten steps. A few hours later, I even had a vasovagal attack when I tried to climb back to bed for the second time at night. I almost lost consciousness.

Day 3: I started to walk and climb up and down with a walker independently. I walked about a hundred steps and felt OK, but my left foot was not as nimble as my right foot.
Day 4: The situation got better every day. I started to walk with a walker independently many times. I had no problem going to the toilet by myself and could sit/stand.
Day 5: I lay flat for a day and got up and walked a few times.
Day 6: In the morning, the doctor came to demonstrate how to lengthening the fiaxtor. The screw was rotated 90 degrees to extend 0.25mm. In the first week, it shoud be three times a day, which is a total of 0.75mm a day. After that, it cloud be four times a day, depending on the tolerance, and a total lengthening of 1mm a day. Two assistants from the hospital help me transfer from hospital to hotel. I gave them all the cash but they refused to accept it. They said we were friends. However, I gave the cash to the hotel reception, and they could deliver the takeout to my room. Talabat is very convenient and cheap in New Cairo, whether it is ordering food or buying items from the pharmacy.

Day 7-16 08.12.2024 - 17.12.2024
Day 7, 08.12.2024
Started to lengthen today, rotate the screw 90 degrees every 8 hours, that is 0.25mm, three times a day, a total of 0.75mm, no feeling after lengthening.

Day 8/9/10
0.75mm per day, but I found that my walking ability is getting worse and worse, especially as long as the leg moves, there will be a clicking sound from the fibula.

Day 11, 12.12.2024
This morning I went out to the hospital for an x-ray, and used a walker to leave the hotel, but I still couldn't go down the stairs, so the staff had to carry me down the stairs. The hospital's x-ray showed that the bones were broken normally, and the fibula of the left leg was not completely aligned, but it didn't matter, it was normal.  Doctor told me to turn the screw 4 times a day from today, which is 1mm a day, for a week firstly.

Day 15/16, 16/17
Legs hurt in the morning and evening, but it's still bearable. Walking ability with a walker is the same as before.
And as of now, 10mm was lengthed, which is the first 1cm!
