You remind me of my friend that refuse to drive in the highway because he's afraid to get hit by a truck and die. It's possible sure but the odds are so small that it's negligible.

For the surgery if you go to a competent surgeon it should almost be a non-factor ( I think the chance of you dying from the surgery is higher but that outcome is also extremely low ).

Christ, I felt bad for her! A compensation of ~200k AUD is nowhere compared to the trauma of loosing both legs for the rest of her life!
