Ex: if someone did surgery, got permanent knee pain afterwards

What are some things (aside from using a cane/crutches whenever possible) to damage control/make life more bearable?

I'm sort of trying to visualize the worst case scenario, see how I'd deal with it,come to terms with the possiblity

Just do normal things and live with some slight discomfort sometimes.  It's not that bad.
