What happens if nail malfunctions?

If the Precice or Stryde nail malfunctions and refuses to lengthen, would they change the nail and continue with the old osteotomy or would they do a new osteotomy? Is it a very difficult surgery?

If its not lengthening because the osteotomy site re-connected you will need rebreaking. If its not lenghtneing, more likely its an issue with the external magnet, which can be replaced easily.

If it's not lengthening because of preconsolidation will they rebreak in the same place or a new place? I don't know how they can break through soft callus.

If it is due to magnet failure, they just replace the nail? Won't it still mess up the osteotomy site?

Hi Ok

You don't need to worry about nail malfunction.  I have been this forum for a long time and seen some patients in person and am a former patient too.  I have never seen that problem.  The problem that could happen are ERC malfunction which happened to me and others.  But you can bring your ERC to hospital so that they can fix it or replace it with a new one, right away.  They break bones again only when patients have bone grow too fast, which is very uncommon.  So don't worry about this.

Malfunction of nail happened many times with precice nails.
Watch Paley’s video.  He even talks about it just last year.
Also I heard early nail of Stryde had some minor problems so it’s been reviced.

If lengthening stoped before reaching to the goal, either you stop or need to do another surgery to continue.
Sometimes they find out the nail is not working just right before surgery when testing it

I guess the only question that remains is whether another new osteotomy is done or the old one is re-opened.

During lengthening callus is still soft, no need of another osteotomy
