Hi, recently realized I have bow legs. If I decide to get limb lengthening in the US, would some of the costs be covered? I know it's usually fixed with an osteotomy, but I know that lengthening your legs can correct it as well.
Doubtful. A Floridian LL patient with me in China said his insurance would've paid for Paley to fix his bowed legs with ISKD but he went to China so he could get both correction and lengthening in one go.
I did more research on this and there's a good chance that insurance will cover some of the costs. You're referring to a patient you've talked to ~10 years ago and that only consulted with Paley. Nowadays, insurance seems to cover around half of the cost of surgery if you have a rotational deformity of any kind. Have also talked to someone else with femoral anteversion who was able to get their cost reduced to 35-40k. In this episode on the podcast by Victor (), Dr. Reif said that insurance covers a lot of the hospital costs when it comes to correcting bow legs/knock knees while lengthening because they tend to view the surgery more as correcting a rotational deformity. The thing that costs the most will obviously be using Precise nails, because surgeons have the option to use trauma nails which are a lot more affordable. At minimum the surgery will cost 32-25k, but it's more realistic to pay anywhere from 40-50k.
