I've had the idea in my head for a while that the tiny plates used for orthognathic surgery could be used to hold a sliced vertebra a millimeter or two apart so it could fill in with new bone.  Do that on all of them and you could get a couple of cm in the torso while undergoing tremendous risk and paying exhorbitant fees.
