Hi everyone, I'm considering limb lengthening surgery at the London Surgery Centre and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with their methods? I've heard they offer both external fixators and internal lengthening nails. Which one is best and what are the pros and cons of each? I'm looking to lengthen my femur by about 5cm.

Honestly, I've been through the process and it's not easy. I had the Ilizarov method done at the London Surgery Centre about a year ago and the pain during the first 2 weeks was intense. The cost was around £15,000-£25,000, but it was worth it for me. My doctor was great and the rehab process was tough, but I'm happy with the results. I lengthened my femur by 4cm and my tibia by 3cm.

I'm not sure if it's worth the risk, to be honest. I've read about all the potential complications, like infection and nerve damage. And what about the cost? £15,000-£25,000 is a lot of money. Has anyone considered the long-term effects of limb lengthening on the joints and muscles? I'm worried that it could lead to more problems down the line.

Physiological Mechanisms of Distraction Osteogenesis

As an obsessive forum veteran with a deep understanding of orthopedic procedures, I'd like to provide a detailed overview of the physiological mechanisms involved in distraction osteogenesis. This complex process involves the coordinated action of osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes, leading to the stimulation of new bone growth through the gradual lengthening of bone segments.

  • The process of distraction osteogenesis involves the stimulation of new bone growth through the gradual lengthening of bone segments.
  • The Ilizarov method utilizes external fixators to provide stability and control during the distraction process.
  • Internal lengthening nails, such as the Precice nail, can be used in combination with external fixators or alone for limb lengthening.

When considering limb lengthening surgery, it's essential to weigh the pros and cons of each method and consider individual factors, such as the length of the bone segment to be lengthened and the patient's overall health. The consolidation rate, which refers to the rate at which new bone forms, is an important consideration, as it can vary depending on the method used.

Hi @LLHopeful, I'm also considering limb lengthening surgery and I'm wondering if you've looked into the different types of internal lengthening nails available? I've heard that the Precice nail is a good option, but I'm not sure if it's suitable for my case.

@NewbieNelly, yeah I've looked into the Precice nail and it seems like a good option. I've also considered the Stryde nail, but I'm not sure which one is best for my case. Maybe @BoneExpert3000 can help us out?

@SkepticalSarah, I understand your concerns about the risks and complications, but for me, the benefits outweighed the risks. I've had a great experience with the London Surgery Centre and I would recommend them to anyone considering limb lengthening surgery.
