I don't believe so. You've still got Pitt, Depp, DiCaprio (just under 6'0), Taylor Lautner (who is a Twilight pretty boy and slightly shorter than 5'9), Daniel Craig (the shortest bond yet), etc.

Taller men are harder to film as well. I don't think there's a phasing out of short male actors. People on this forum are probably just going to notice more if particular celebs are exceptionally tall, imo.

Quote from: endomorphisme on April 02, 2015, 04:44:14 PMHollywood actors are getting taller and most sex symbols are now altleast 185 cm .
185 cm is the new 183 cm I guess, it is the height you have to be to look good.

I partially disagree, 185 cm still looks decent next to 190 cm

Even though your extreme generalization is dead wrong, your general premise is wrong as well. 5' 11" to 6' 2" is considered the ideal height range for physical attractiveness according to women's preferences.

If you were correct that 185 CM is the height you have to be to look good, than 10% of men just make it to the party. Then you have to consider physique, facial aesthetics, and style, and you are left with 2% of men looking good and 98% not looking good.

You are probably using the image of Hollywood good looks as a utopian ideology and aren't referring to "real life", but even in Hollywood, that number starts at 5' 11" (180 CM), or your brad pitts and George clooneys

No. Are any of us as old as Daniel Craig, Leo, Pitt or Ryan gosling? In fact in a way you could say that the sex symbols are actually getting shorter by comparing younger actors to the older ones. Some of the most famous early to late 20's heartthrobs (for women) would be Justin Beiber, Dave Franco, Taylor Lautner, Zac Efron and the One Direction group — all are in the 5'7-5'11 range.

But I don't think hollywood really cares too much about height because it doesn't matter in movies, it's easy to make a 5'7" guy look the same height as a 5'11" by having lower camera angles, in fact it makes it easier to have similar heights when filming with women.

Agree with w1998. I think in Hollywood, as long a guy is 5'7", if he's very good looking, you don't hear too much about his height. Tom Cruise is the exception to this (I think he's like between 5'7-5'8"), because he always dates women a lot taller than him. But we hardly hear about how Usher, Zac Efron, Robert Downey Jr and Mark Wahlberg are short (even if it is mentioned from time to time).

Guys that are under 5'6" like Daniel Radcliffe, Josh Hutcherson, Kevin Hart, the guy from Hawaii Five-0 (and more recently, Dave Franco)...you almost always hear about how short they are.

I hate to break it to you, but the guys you mentioned are sex symbols for young girls, not older girls and women

Absolutely, without question. The new guard of Hollywood studs- Channing Tatum, the Hemsworths, Bradley Cooper, Henry Cavill, Skarsgard, etc are all 6'+ males, and they are quickly replacing the older generation. I don't think we will be seeing any more Brad Pitts or Tom Cruises around anymore (in terms of height), not as big protagonists in blockbuster movies with extreme levels of fame like Pitt and Cruise had anyway. The age of short actors is over. Today's action packed blockbusters are absolutely filled with tall, all-american high testosterone looking, square jawed males and their physical forms.

If you ask socially conscious young women who pay attention to celebrities and are aware of the latest trends (so 85+% of them) who the hottest actors are, they'll tell you Hemsworth, Decaprio, Channing Tatum, etc. No old little men past their primes who coping short males use as examples of desirable sex symbols, like Pitt or Cruise.

There are always roles for short and tall actors. So I don't believe that short males are being phased out. Hollywood will require them in later movies. Just look at the movie, Lord of the Ring, what tall men can play the role of the hobbit? lol

But if we're just talking about sex symbol, I agree that height is attraction. And coming from a culture that idolize football and basketball stars, I wouldn't be surprised even more.

Movies is after-all a business and 50% of the movie-goers are women (I think this figure is higher b/c men are cheap). Women want to go see a movie that would workout their fantasy. Asking women what they want to see is like asking what is their sexual preference. A movie that comes to mind that is so crappy and every critic think it's suck but still become a blockbuster hit is 50 Shades of Grey. An average girl who got on with a tall, handsome, intellectual, billionaire, under 27 who speaks French and does charity work and who send her sexual texting constantly. I only know this movie because the book version is the best seller on amazon - it's like pornographic for female.

An equivalent movie for men is Austin Power, a short, unattractive but comic male who is the sex symbol and gets on with beautiful women and ends up saving the world. But I haven't seen this type of movie for a long time so maybe it's true that short male is being faze out of the sexual arena (jk)

In terms of hollywood trend, I'm really far behind, and it's worst that I only prefer horror genre. The only actor up there that I recognize is Chris Hemprey and that's only because Jay Leno made fun about it in the late night show.

Many of the Hollywood role models and sex symbols decades ago were also much taller than average.

As an example:

Clark Gable - 6'1
Burt Lancaster - 6'1
Cary Grant - 6'1.5
Sean Connery - 6'2
Victor Mature - 6'2.5
Johnny Weissmuller - 6'3
Gregory Peck - 6'3
Gary Cooper - 6'3
Charlton Heston - 6'3
Christopher Reeve - 6'4
Clint Eastwood - 6'4
John Wayne - 6'4

There are probably more short males getting leading roles now than there were before.

Fun fact: naturally 6'4 (194CM) John Wayne often wore 3-4 inch shoe lifts!

He was already taller than over 99% of men. Who could he possibly have been trying to be taller than? Lol.
