I guess it depends of where you live. I would say that being around 3 inches above average is always the ideal height.
I am around 182-180 ( depending of the time of the day) and my height in northern Europe is definitely not ideal. Here the average is around 5'11-6' and obviously the ideal height would be around 6'3.
On the other hand I lived in south America in the past and 5'11 was a very good height there

I have been briefly to Brazil but lived in Colombia. In Colombia average male height is around 170 so 181 is ideal there. 190 would be too tall. On the other hand in northern Europe 181cm is just average and 190 would be ideal in my opinion.

I heard people in South America also getting taller by average thanks to better health care.
