Estimate the height

How much height does the average persons footwear give them? If a person is 5'9 in shoes what would you estimate them without footwear? My friend is below average height, yet appears average height in shoes. I can't figure it out, definitely not lifts. Is it possible basketball shoes add over 3cm?
