For those who have had surgery. Does anyone’s precice nail a gear grinding or skipping noise when lengthening? Similar to a clutch slipping in a manual car. Mine suddenly started around the 18mm mark..

I remember mine grinding and then it even made a crazy popping noise when I was lengthening. I always had a lingering fear it was going to dysfunction. You’re fine though. I spoke to the rep from nuvasive and they said that is pretty standard.

Ahh okay. I appreciate the reassurance. Its just psychologically unnerving.. How long did yours last? And did it go away?

Pretty sure I experienced it as well and just like you freaked out over this. My doc (Rozbruch) said it's fine and continue lengthening. In my case it happened mostly in the beginning (first 1-2 weeks), and a lot more in my right leg compared to left. As I approached 8cm, it started happening again, and again was told not to worry.

My girlfriend was sitting with me during one of the major ‘popping’ sounds that the machine made. She winced and made a face and asked me if I was okay. I had this lingering fear that the rod would malfunction and spring to the max length inside my legs lol.

Honestly man, this is pretty standard. It doesn’t go away, you’ll keep getting the grinding throughout the course of lengthening.   sucks man, but as I tell other LL’ers - take it 1MM at a time.

I wonder what it is and why it happens at different lengths. Glad yours wasn't an issue!

Same. At first I reached out to the NuVasive guy, who was very careful not to give any "medical advice" and told me to reach out to my doctor. I found it very strange that the person representing the company building the nail & device arguing my doctor should know more about it than them. I believe he also send it within NuVasive but never heard anything back.

I found the whole thing very strange, but was happy that Rozbruch did experience it in the past and wasn't worried.

Yes; given the nature of the gear mechanism one would expect to experience these phenomena. Particularly near the end of the distraction phase. Nothing to worry about~
