So I am still considering Betzbone vs Precise 2 and one key difference that I have discovered after talking to staff at the Betz institute is that they don’t perform an IT band release as they believe this is unnecessary.

As far as I understand, Giotikas and the other docs who use precise / stryde perform an IT band release. Is it really necessary if I am going for 7/8cm in length? Betz patients seem to achieve 8cm+ and don’t have their IT band released which makes me wonder if it’s needed.

Any thoughts on this?

If you want more than 5cm it is a good idea to do it. Even if you don't it is a good idea. It is soft tissue that heals completely quickly and makes the process easier by making you less tight. Paley has mentioned that after healing it is like nothing ever happened to the band. Most surgeons do this prophylactically because it's that safe and beneficial. It is nothing close to an Achilles lengthening which is downright much much more brutal and has devasting lingering effects. This will greatly improve your chances of getting your desired goal.

It is not required, but most people get it because the upside is very good. Even gymnasts who are ridiculously flexible eventually get it half way into lengthening because that's how tight the IT band gets. Better to do it early in the same operation as original surgery than later eh? It's not unecessary, if it was then why would every good surgeon do it? That's ridiculous. You really trust the word of Betz over Paley, Rozbruch, Mahboubian, Parihar, Giotikas, Donghoon Lee?

Does he say the same thing about splitting the patellar ligament?

I would not get any unnecessary surgery.

I agree that it is a bit odd that all the top docs perform one and Betz doesn’t but I guess it is down to different philosophies on recovery / healing etc. The more I read into precise and betzbone, the more I am favouring precise. It just seems like an overall safer nail even if the latest betzbone is fully weight bearing.

My main concern is if I am back in my home country and I encounter an issue with the betzbone, would a surgeon here be likely to be able to fix it if needed? Whereas precise is widely used worldwide so I imagine issues could be resolved more easily.

@MDOW well it's unnecessary technically, but if one wants duckass for a year or swaying gait for a long time, they would probably prefer to have done the band release

@rb fixing complications would probably just involve removing the Betzbone and inserting a trauma nail. Doubt they would continue lengthening and give you a precice if you did have a complication like a nail breakage or running nail

Almost every doctor nowadays perform IT band release. It's necessary if you don't want to risk to be crooked. It will heal in 1-2 years.

What are the consequences of a released IT band? Anyone know?

I'm not sure if there are any long term consequences, but I haven't noticed anything from getting mine released. At three months post-op it's also possible that my IT band has healed already since the doctor said it would heal very fast.

The problem is that is an inextensible structure so you could have problems while lenghtening after a bit and you could end stopping lenghtening. For example you could face stuff like subluxation of the knee (crooked) or more easily just too much pressure on the knee joint with all the consequences it causes. Remember that IT band means Ileo-Tibial band, it starts on the hip and end on the tibia, so every joint in between is interested.

I am also considering the Betzbone. It is more expensive but there don't seem to be many other alternatives right now, since Stryde might take a year.

I want to gain 5, up to 5.5 cm. It's not a huge amount and am hoping that my IT band (if it doesn't get released) won't be super stretched.

Are there any ways I can prepare my IT band for the stretching?
