Hi everyone, I'm a 16-year-old girl and I'm considering limb lengthening to gain about 5cm. I've heard that modern techniques have made the process safer, but I'm still worried about the risks. Can anyone who has gone through this share their experience?

I had the surgery when I was 17 and I gained 6cm. The recovery was tough, especially the first few weeks. I had to deal with a lot of pain and discomfort, but it was worth it in the end. My doctor used the Precice nail and it worked really well. However, I did have some complications, including a pin tract infection and a temporary nerve injury. But my doctor was great and helped me through it all.

I'm not sure if it's worth the risk. I've read about all the potential complications, like non-union and nerve damage. And what about the cost? I've heard it can be really expensive. Has anyone else considered the potential risks and costs?

Distraction Osteogenesis: A Review of the Literature

From my analysis of the medical literature, it appears that distraction osteogenesis is a viable option for limb lengthening. The process involves the use of an external fixator or internal device to gradually distract the bone, allowing for new bone formation. The osteotomy is a critical step in this process, as it requires careful planning and execution to ensure proper callus formation and distraction osteogenesis. The use of an intramedullary nail, such as the Precice or Stryde nail, can help to stabilize the bone and promote healing. However, it's essential to carefully weigh the potential risks and benefits, including the risk of non-union, nerve damage, and infection.

  • The Ilizarov method is a well-established technique for limb lengthening, but it can be associated with a higher risk of complications.
  • The use of internal motorized devices has been shown to reduce the risk of complications and improve outcomes.
  • Careful pre-operative planning and post-operative care are essential for ensuring a successful outcome.

I agree with @LimbLengthener23, the recovery can be tough, but it's worth it in the end. I've been considering the procedure myself and I was wondering, @OrthoNerd3000, can you tell me more about the different types of internal devices that are available?

I had the surgery a few years ago and I've never looked back. I gained 8cm and it's completely changed my life. I was a bit worried about the risks, but my doctor was great and helped me through it all. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is considering it.

I'm still not convinced. I've read about all the potential complications and I'm worried about the risk of non-union. Has anyone else experienced this? How did you deal with it?
