I'm considering limb lengthening surgery in Turkey and I'm wondering if Istanbul is safer than Ankara for a 5cm height gain. Can anyone share their experiences or provide some insight?

I underwent limb lengthening surgery in Istanbul and gained 5.5cm in height. The procedure was a success, but the recovery was tough. I had to use a wheelchair for 3 months and experienced some nerve damage. However, the results were worth it. My doctor was experienced, and the hospital was well-equipped.

I'm not sure if limb lengthening surgery is a good idea, especially in a foreign country. Have you considered the risks and complications? I've read about people experiencing infections, nerve damage, and even death. Is the potential height gain really worth it?

Distraction Osteogenesis and Limb Lengthening

When considering limb lengthening surgery, it's essential to understand the process of distraction osteogenesis. This involves the use of an external fixator to gradually pull apart the bone, allowing new bone growth to occur. The Ilizarov circular external fixator is a commonly used device for this purpose.

Risks and Complications

  • Non-union or poor bone healing
  • Infection
  • Nerve damage

However, with proper patient selection and careful planning, limb lengthening surgery can be a successful and life-changing procedure.

@skeptical_sally, I understand your concerns, but for some people, limb lengthening surgery is a viable option. I've done extensive research and consulted with several doctors. While there are risks involved, the potential benefits can be significant.

I've lived in Ankara for several years and can attest to the fact that the city has some excellent hospitals and doctors. While Istanbul may have more options, Ankara is definitely a viable choice for limb lengthening surgery. @femur_dreamer, I'd be happy to provide more information about the doctors and hospitals in Ankara if you're interested.

@tall_guy88, I was treated by Dr. Mehmet at the Istanbul Medical Center. The care I received was top-notch, and I'm extremely satisfied with the results. However, I must remind you that every person's experience is unique, and it's essential to do your own research and consult with several doctors before making a decision.

As an orthopedic surgeon, I must emphasize that limb lengthening surgery is a complex procedure that requires thorough evaluation and discussion with a qualified medical professional. The decision to undergo surgery should be based on a comprehensive assessment of the individual's overall health, the extent of the limb length discrepancy, and the potential risks and benefits associated with the procedure.
