being off of work for 6 months - 1 year and having to pay for a 5 figure loan with sky high rates.
I'm a SWE also. In my exp I was off work for 3mo, not 6mo (assuming remote work), so not too bad regarding employment. Though it's good that you gave buffer in your estimate.

I work in IT, not exactly software development but still tech and rarely need to stand or use legs in general.
What is your reason tell your boss to take a 3 month break off of work? I can't think of any and don't want to say cosmetic limb lengthening.

Just say corrective orthopedic surgery on your legs. You don't have to give any details, and HIPAA allows you to keep the details private.

Told my boss I had an important surgery I need to get done. Done! no more questions asked. My manager was very nice though. I knew there're other nosy bosses out there or the ones who "care" too much. You can tell them "It's not your f*cking business" (in your head lol). Just tell them "I'm sorry that's my personal matter".

Good suggestion but I feel like leaving it at that generic description will lead to gossip and drama, I'll will be more specific and say corrective orthopedic surgery then leave it at that.

Simple yet effective, I'll shut my manager and HR down by simply refusing to comment further on the grounds of HIPAA (in a very polite way of course). The good and bad thing about tech is that people can take on other coworkers' duties relatively easily so one person on leave doesn't impact productivity too much - though 3 months is a bit of a stretch, but we'll see when the time comes.
