Weird question, but does anyone know if a catheter is used when an internal nail is being removed? I'm asking because honestly, that feeling when getting it removed was the worst part of the whole journey for me.

Is it necessary to use in the first surgery? For example, pure external fixator.

If you are under general anesthesia and the surgery is less than about 4h you probably don‘t get one. My femur surgery was longer (like 3 1/2h) than average and I had no catheter at all. Nail removal is like 1h under anesthesia so you won‘t get one. If you get epidural (regional) anesthesia you will have one in place for a few days because you will be totally numbed from the waist down for some time (and can‘t urinate). I would recommend to go under general anesthesia and not regional.

after the  first surgery  , I  lied in bed for  2 days without moving around , it really helps my body to  recover .
and 2 days later , I was able to walk to the gym and back to bed  with a walker .

so , catheter was good for me . I guess you can make requests about not using it . see what the nurse  says  ,   surgery   is  2  hours tops  .

why do you recommend general instead of epidural?

I don‘t know why anyone would want regional and be awake for a surgery like that. General is very safe and for the patient it‘s also nice because you just skip time. I would say it‘s safer plus with regional you can‘t walk on OP day or even move around. If you take the pain killer regiment on the first few days you won‘t have pain so I think that argument doesn‘t stand up for regional either. Regional is definitely the worse choice. Especially with a weightbearing nail.
