Nothing, I don't have to tell my employer of the details of my living situation unless it impacts my ability to work remotely.

Tell them there was a medical emergency your mom was having and you had to drop everything to help her. Usually as you say that they won't ask any more questions about the situation and move on.
Yeah, it's a lie, but nothing you can really do about it.
