I am planning to do this in India (either Dr. Parihar or Dr. Sharma). Is it possible to donate your own blood prior to surgery for a blood transfusion later on? I don't know where they source blood from in these hospitals in India and so want to be safe and donate my own blood.

I don't know how it works in India and whether they store blood in the hospital itself? Or do they get it from a third party service or the government if there is an emergency need?

In India chances of getting HIV from blood transfusion is high.

Got a response that it's not logistically easy and unlikely they will do this.

There is nothing funny about HIV. It's worse than any complications of this surgery except death.

Skillset of Indian doctors (Dr. Parihar and Dr. Sharma) is good, but there is a high chance of infections and if blood transfusion becomes necessary it can become very dangerous.

Dr. Sharma works from a reputed hospital but is less skilled. Dr. Parihar is way more skilled in India but he works from a small hospital where there is probably a high risk of infections.

Quote from: indian on April 07, 2021, 06:07:16 PMInfection mostly never happens in the hospital or during surgery it happens when you are out on your own and not taking care of your externals. If you are doing internals then a very very small chance of infection if you really have bad luck. And a lot of people in India receive blood and there is no risk. All blood samples are well tested and stored. It's not 1700s or something. If you get HIV then you can sue for medical negligence and they'll have to go to jail for that.

If you are doing LON then it's the worst of both worlds. They insert a nail inside (which in India might be around 2% risk of infection compared < 1% in the west) and then the frames can create additional infection which you can prevent on your own.

If you plan to sue the hospital if you get HIV then you better have a test just before the surgery so that you can prove it happened because of the surgery. Otherwise it will be impossible to prove this.

I still think it's best to donate your own blood so that there are low risks. I have been asking around and it seems like it's not a thing in India.

Quote from: indian on April 08, 2021, 05:48:05 AMThey will test you before surgery for hiv and everything. There is no proof that infection risk is 2% in India and 1 % is west. It's complete BS.

Testing for HIV before surgery has nothing to do with getting it through blood transfusion. What is the relation? Blood is sourced from the government or other third party blood banks which is poorly regulated in India. If they do cheap testing which does not detect presence of HIV early on (some tests give correct results days after infection but some do only after weeks, so there is a window when the results are wrong), then they might have infected blood.

And general infection rate would probably be higher in India because it's more unhygienic but I don't have data to back this up.

Quote from: indian on April 08, 2021, 08:18:50 AMYou said you have to test before the surgery so that you can sue if you get it after that so I am saying they do it so that you can't sue. Forget about LL fix your bain first.

Sorry I did not notice the context.

Quote from: indian on April 08, 2021, 08:19:44 AMand if you are so worried then why are you even considering do it in the west.

$$$

We have self blood donation before surgery and I'm just super disappointed it doesn't exist in India.
