I am an Indian origin Australian and want to get precice stryde femur lengthening surgery. Here in Australia they dont do LL for height gain. I had an embarassing visit to my GP who insisted on me seeing a psychologist and didnt agree to refer me to an LL specialist.

I dont believe this surgery is even available here (even if I paid for it) and honestly sometimes I feel the healthcare is not all that great for specialised surgeries. This is the case in many universal healthcare countries. Good healthcare is available to all but not rare specialised surgeries. They dont even see much trauma volume here and population density is so low.

I have grandparents in Mumbai and was considering getting LL with Dr. Parihar who is near them. My only qualm is that their hospital looks quite basic. I would NOT mind a dreary stay in the recovery room but I am afraid of getting infections.

My image of "medical tourism" in India was of huge hospitals which stand contrasting to the rest of the developing India. I know some previous surgeons on this board (Dr. Sarin, Dr. Sringare) operate out of such "big" hospitals but I would not like to be under their care for their lack of credentials.

Here is how medical equipment are cleaned in a state of the art facility.

Would such a facility exist in the one Dr. Parihar operates in?

Did any past patients or visitors talk about such concerns or get to see the hospital during a consultation?

Somehow the few LL doctors in India with good credentials (Dr. Parihar, Dr. Suhas Shah and Dr. Milind Chaudhury) all operate from their own small hospitals. Are they able to maintain high sterility in small setups?

I have family in Mumbai and am more acclamatised to the city. While planning this surgery a year ago I was ready to go anywhere in the world to do it, but it is actually quite scary to actually go ahead and do it now that I am ready. Not having family near me is turning out to be more worrying than I had imagined.

Also I have these pieces of evidence in favour of Dr. Parihar:

- Very good resume
- Not new to this field (over 20 years of experience)
- Youtube channel - https://www.youtube.com/user/mangalparihar with lots of seminars and teaching videos for other doctors
- Very good English (compared to many European doctors)
- Uses Precice and Stryde nails

I am trying to look outside of this "bubble" of LL forum and avoid doctors who have no reputation outside of this "cosmetic" LL community. That would leave me with Dr. Paley, Dr. Rozbruch and Dr. Parihar. Dr. Giotikas was unheard of outside of this forum and I have no way of investigating if he is a famous surgeon in Greece.

If I can get over the fear of infections at an older hospital I would go ahead and do it in Mumbai. Infections are by far the worst outcome of LL which is the only way to lead to the worst complication of an amputation.

Man I really wish any past LLers would opine about this. I see the only forum members who did this are KiloKAHN, Penguinn and Useful Dude who hardly post anymore. I don't want to postpone this procedure anymore but every now and then I get this picture of a guy with amputated legs and it scares the hell out of me.  Is Mangal Anand hospital hygienic and sterile?

No one did, it's the worst case outcome and sometimes I get nightmare-like imaginations of losing legs. When I think of I just want to minimize all the ways in which I can lose my legs which is ONLY through deep bone infections. That's how I have developed these worries.

Quote from: KiloKAHN on August 29, 2019, 06:53:38 PMDr Parihar reuses most of his external fixation devices between patients, which helps lowers costs. I would imagine if his patients were getting infections because of improper sterilization of the devices in between uses, his reputation over there wouldn't be as good as it is. I only got superficial pinsite infections myself, usually around the ankle or knee joint where there was a lot more movement, but proper pinsite care helped minimize it. As for the operating theater where the surgery takes place, it was bright white inside and looked really clean, not reflective of the outside areas of the hospital.

Thanks for the reply KiloKAHN.

I am personally not interested in doing externals, but only internals which unfortunately have a greater risk of infection and thus amputation. I'm glad to know that the inside of the hospital looks clean and bright.

Did you also see a large volume of surgeries happening there? It would significantly clear my mind if so.

If money were not a constraint for you and you were to choose to get another LL (would have to be internal femurs obviously) would you go back to Dr. Parihar?

I am scheduling a video consultation with them. I will try to ask about what steps they take to prevent infections. If anyone has questions let me know.

Stryde nails are available and cost "25 lakh Indian rupees" apparently.

Who told you btw?

Heard from them. Bear in mind, Nuvasive fixes the price in dollars and what you pay in INR changes as per currency fluctuations. Who posted a video of his consultation?

It's not unsanitary. In fact one of the most common cases they treat is infected non unions. I have spoken with 2 non CLL patients (one for leg length discrepancy and one for infected non union in tibia) who were treated there who said there were no hygiene issues and the OT looked modern. Also he is extremely well known in Mumbai and India among orthopaedic doctors and complex cases requiring deformity correction are frequently referred to him.

but it's always a bit scary when the outsides of a place are also not very well looked after. So in that sense it's certainly more comforting to go to South Korea where you will be more mentally reassured about cleanliness.

If you are still "planning" to do LL sometime in the future, don't worry about all this now. When you have enough money, go visit both places and make a decision. It's honestly a waste of time and energy to think about this while still planning to do LL. When you set your mind to it and plan to do it immediately, then you can start acting. Honestly most people who come here to inquire about LL and doctors eventually never do it. If you really want it, you will find some way Is Mangal Anand hospital hygienic and sterile?
