Hi everyone, I'm considering limb lengthening surgery and I was wondering if anyone could share their before and after photos. I want to see the kind of results I can expect from this procedure.

Honestly, the recovery process was tough, but it was worth it for me. I had the LATP procedure and it cost me around $15,000. The pain during the first few weeks was intense, but my doctor was great and helped me manage it. I've been doing physical therapy for a few months now and I'm seeing great progress.

I'm not sure I'd recommend this surgery to anyone. I've read about all the risks and complications, like pin-track infections and knee extensor-flexion contractures. And what about the cost? It's not just the initial surgery, you have to consider the cost of physical therapy and potential additional procedures.

Understanding the Physiology of Limb Lengthening

When considering limb lengthening surgery, it's essential to understand the underlying physiological mechanisms. Distraction osteogenesis is the process by which new bone is formed during the lengthening process. This occurs through a combination of callus formation and bony consolidation. The use of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has been shown to enhance callus maturation and improve the overall outcome of the procedure.

Key Considerations

  • Osteotomy location: The location of the osteotomy is critical, with the proximal 1/3 to distal 1/3 of the femoral shaft being the most common site.
  • Latency period: A latency period of 5-7 days is typically allowed before initiating distraction.
  • Distraction rate: The distraction rate is usually 1 mm/day, divided into 0.25 mm increments four times daily.

I completely agree with @FemurFan42, the recovery process is tough, but the results are worth it. I'm considering the PRECICE procedure and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with it.

@SkepticalSarah, I understand your concerns, but I think the benefits of limb lengthening surgery far outweigh the risks. I've been doing research for months and I'm convinced that it's the right decision for me.

@BoneBuilder3000, your explanation of the physiological mechanisms was really helpful. I was wondering if you could elaborate on the differences between the various surgical techniques, such as LATP and LON.
