Hi everyone, I'm considering Stryde nail for my limb lengthening procedure and I was wondering what the average length gains are after 1 year of distraction and consolidation. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Honestly, the pain during the first 2 weeks was brutal. I paid $20,000 for the procedure and had to take 6 months off work. But after 1 year, I've gained about 6cm and I'm really happy with the results. My doctor said I should expect some minor complications like pin tract infections, but nothing too serious.

Is it really worth the risk of non-union? I read that the rate of tibial malalignment can be as high as 15.62%. And what about the cost? $20,000 is a lot of money. Has anyone considered alternative methods like exercise or physical therapy?

Physiological Mechanisms of Distraction Osteogenesis

From my deep dive into the literature and consultations with experts, it's clear that distraction osteogenesis is a complex process involving the coordination of multiple cell types and signaling pathways. The use of an intramedullary nail, such as the Stryde nail, can help to stabilize the bone segment during the distraction phase and promote callus formation and bone remodeling. However, it's essential to carefully consider the osteotomy technique and the placement of the nail to avoid complications like axis deviation and docking-site fractures.

  • Paley & Herzenberg (1997) describe the original LON technique, which combines an external fixation frame with a locked intramedullary nail.
  • Kim et al. (2012) report successful application of LON in both the tibia and femur, with satisfactory length gains and minimal complications.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while the Stryde nail can be an effective tool for limb lengthening, it's crucial to carefully weigh the potential benefits and risks and to consult with a qualified medical professional to determine the best course of treatment.

I agree with @StrydeVeteran, the pain during the first 2 weeks was intense, but it was worth it in the end. I've gained about 5cm and I'm really happy with the results. @CautiousTom, I understand your concerns, but I think the benefits outweigh the risks. And @LegNerd_99, thanks for the detailed explanation of the physiological mechanisms involved!

I'm considering the Stryde nail procedure and I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to prepare for the recovery process. @StrydeVeteran, can you tell me more about your experience with the procedure and what you did to manage the pain?

I've been researching the Stryde nail procedure and I'm interested in learning more about the potential complications. @LegNerd_99, can you tell me more about the risks of axis deviation and docking-site fractures? And how can they be prevented?
