Every website claims something different.
Is mens average height 5'9.4 or 5'10.2?
Women is either 5'3.8 or 5'4.4?
These are two most common heights I found. Which is it?
U.S heights are what I researched. Thanks.
I could only speak for NYC based on thousands of people I see.
Average women are 5' 5"- 5' 6"
Men not sure but definitely around 5' 8"- 5' 9"
I would trust a 2012 U.S. Department of Health study: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/series/sr_11/sr11_252.pdf
Between 2007-2010, the average male height in the U.S. is 175.9 cm (5 ft 9.25 in) and 162.1 cm for U.S. females (5 ft 3.81 in). However, this statistic is for everyone over the age of 20. The problem with that is that it includes people over 50 who usually start shrinking an inch or two until they die.
To get a real measure of average height, you have to look at people who are 20-39 years old. And that average height is 176.3 cm (5 ft 9.4 in) for all races, 178.4 cm (5 ft 10.2 in) for non-Hispanic Whites and 170.5 cm (5 ft 7.1 in) for a Mexican American. I think this is where you got differing numbers. As you can see, the immigrants bring down the average height of males.
So the question between 5'9.4" vs 5'10.2" is: are you looking at the average height of every male in the U.S., or just the white males in the U.S.?
The reason why DevilDog is reporting the average height at around 5' 8"- 5' 9" is probably because NYC has a very high immigrant population, which brings down the average. Immigrants are usually shorter because of malnutrition and genetics.
I can agree with DIFM's view point. For context I go one of the most diverse universities in the entire U.S and I see a incredible variety in people's heights. I would probably speculate that because of this the spectrum of height for males is around 5'8-5'9.5. There are very tall men, and some other short(er) gentleman in my university. For girls it's definitely 5'2-5'4; but there are just as many petie girls are there are tall ones
In the US white people between 19-45 are 177-180 on average I believe, in northern europe it is 180-183 and other anglo saxon countries match the US.
France is around 178-180 and southern euro countries like Italy and Spain have an average height of around 175-180. These are for young men.
Basically if you are maybe 183-184 you should be at least comfortably average more or less everywhere.
Thank you this is very informative. What I get out of this is the national average is 5'9.4. For white races it is 5'10.2.
This means in the future we should expect the average height to go down. White races are breeding less and immigrants are reproducing much faster.
Currently for men:
173 cm should be taller then 25%
177 cm should be taller then 50%
185cm should be then 90% of the U.S population.
My generation is 174-175 on average. 20 y.o. people are probably a bit taller, but not a lot: these are the data from the army (so I think they are correct). If you look to old people they are probably on average not taller than 165-167.
In my town 30 y.o. people are on average shorter: probably 172-173, so if I was 170-171 I stayed probably fine with my height... mah!!
Does anyone know the average height for Europe? I'm not talking about a particular country, I'm talking about the average for the whole EU.
