Quote from: hippo60 on April 23, 2023, 12:11:50 AMIt's not just a matter of some practice and getting used to it? They don't encourage you to use crutches? I imagine you'll be able to walk more...

Quote from: Yau on April 23, 2023, 01:14:32 AMI think so. If Dr permitted u walk with crutches. U just need more practice with crutches, don’t use walker anymore. Walk more with crutches everyday.

Yeah I think it’s good to use the crutches, but I am a little scared of slipping and fall as sometimes the bathroom is very wet especially after showering. For my walker one of the PT was really nice and gave me a pair of nonslip tips to put on. Th walker is very safe. Since I am probably just a few weeks away from weight bearing, I decided to just wait it out. The doctor said: “no single leg walking without support; standing only; use the walker or crutches for walking.” One good thing is that I can stand without support. When I want to get something from the shelf I can just stand up from the chair, instead of having to get the walker and walk back.

I am practicing walking with the walker though, very slowly. My balance is not great but not too bad. I get minor numbness/nerve pain like I did in my lengthening phase in my lower left leg if I walk too much sometimes.

I have shared X-rays. I don’t really want to film myself.

Not entirely sure I understand what you mean by "waiting it out". What do you expect to happen once you can weight-bear? I don't think you'll be able to walk unassisted without building your muscles first.

Please tell us some tips to build our muscles during consolidating. Going to gym room to do light legs and hip exercises?

Oh I am just not using crutches. I have been walking like 10 minutes a day with my walker since I was approved to do so last Friday, pushing down hard on the walker because single leg weight bearing limit is 100 lbs now but I weight like 195. The muscles are not great but they are not weak. I’ve been exercising them when lying down, like leg raises etc. PTs gave me a sheet of exercises to do at the beginning of lengthening. Glutes are important for not walking like a duck so I’ve doing them the most - side leg raises etc.

I am only going to the gym for upper body. It’d be the best if your apartment/gym has a pool. You can walk in a pool even during lengthening as long as the water is like chest level (offsets 75% of your weight). There’s a new pool opening up near me so I will be going there daily as soon as they open.

Yeah going to the pool is amazing! I'm doing that few times a week, walking & swimming.
I still don't quite understand what will change once you can weight-bear. Are you planning to walk more than 10 minutes a day using the walker? Or you're hoping you'll be able to walk unassisted?

Do u know other patients u met in WPB recovered well now? Did they have severe complications and other issues? Just wonder the success rate of his patients.

Yeah I am just more comfortable with practicing walking more once the doctor says I am weight bearing. Right now my limit is just 100 lbs per leg per last xray.

Every one (about 10 data points) I know recovered well and doesn't have any issue.

Great!
Hope everything goes well!
After lengthening, did all pain/soreness/ numbness go away? U just practice walking, improve your gait, regain your muscles strength, right?
