Hi everyone, I'm considering limb lengthening surgery and I'm worried about the scars. Has anyone tried using silicone tapes and massage therapy to minimize them? I've heard it can help with wound healing and collagen production.

I've been through the process and I can tell you that the scars are definitely a concern. The cost of the surgery can vary depending on the location and the surgeon, but it's generally in the range of $30,000 to $100,000. I did use silicone tapes and massage therapy, and I think it helped with the healing process. However, everyone's experience is different, so it's hard to say for sure.

I'm not sure it's worth the risk of non-union or other complications. According to the medical literature, the success rate of limb lengthening surgery can be as high as 80-90%, but the recovery time can be up to 6 months. Has anyone considered the potential long-term effects of using silicone tapes and massage therapy on the new bone growth?

Physiological Mechanisms of Distraction Osteogenesis

From my in-depth analysis of the medical literature and consultations with orthopedic experts, I can tell you that the process of distraction osteogenesis involves the creation of a callus at the osteotomy site, which gradually mineralizes to form new bone. The use of silicone tapes and massage therapy may potentially enhance the collagen synthesis and cell proliferation during the consolidation phase, leading to improved bone regeneration and reduced scarring.

Key Considerations

  • Distraction rate: a rate of 1 mm/day is commonly used to avoid overstretching the regenerate bone.
  • Stability of fixation: rigid fixation, such as with an intramedullary nail, can improve consolidation compared to exclusive reliance on external rings.
  • Soft-tissue management: minimizing peri-osteal stripping and preserving vascularity are crucial to reduce the risk of delayed healing.
  • Consolidation phase: the presence of ≥ 3 continuous cortices with uniform mineral density is a critical criterion for evaluating the success of limb lengthening surgery.

I'm new to this forum and I'm considering limb lengthening surgery. Thanks for sharing your experiences, everyone! @HeightHope, did you end up deciding to use silicone tapes and massage therapy? And @LimbLengthener88, how long did it take for your scars to heal?

I agree with @ConcernedCitizen, we need to consider the potential risks and complications. @BoneGeek2000, can you elaborate on the physiological mechanisms of distraction osteogenesis and how silicone tapes and massage therapy might affect the process?

I've been researching limb lengthening surgery for months, and I'm still undecided. @LimbLengthener88, can you tell me more about your experience with the recovery process? What were some of the challenges you faced, and how did you overcome them?
